Wednesday, Oct. 11 the East Meck soccer team held its annual kick cancer game to raise money for kids with cancer.
East’s soccer team has been hosting kick cancer for the last three years in collaboration with student congress. At every kick cancer game, student congress sells snacks and concessions. Those proceeds go to Claire’s army.
East holds the soccer game annually to help raise money for Claire’s army, admission was free with a suggested donation. , all profit from the game went to the Claire’s army cancer fund. Claire’s army is an organization that raises money to financially help kids with cancer and families who can’t afford treatment.
This year’s kick cancer game was held against Butler highschool. The game was a win for East, going into overtime. The winning goal was made by Josuee Buitrago, 0-1. Helping east stay undefeated in each kick cancer game held!
To show awareness for the kids with cancer, East’s soccer players released gold, biodegradable, balloons to create a statement that brought attention to the kids in need. In creating this statement, the soccer players also sported the gold out theme of the game.
The game-winning goal took place in overtime as pressure was mounting. East had the ball in Butler’s half when Josue took matters into his own hands and shot the ball in the bottom right corner. The crowd was ecstatic and Josue posed for the cameras.
“Getting money for kids with cancer, that’s what I really like, because it’s not just a game,” Buitrago said.
