Another one bites the dust. Just 11 games into the season, head coach Frank Reich was relieved of his duties and fired after the worst start in the Carolina Panthers franchise history. The Panthers have now gone six consecutive years with a losing record, appearing to be one of the most inconsistent teams in a league full of continuity.
Consistency has proven to be the key to success for many aspiring NFL teams, serving as the bedrock upon which these illustrious championship franchises are built. In a league where competition is fierce and margins are razor-thin, sustained success demands a steady rhythm of performance and routine. Something David Tepper has yet to show in his six seasons of which he has owned the Carolina Panthers.
Legendary teams like the Packers, Steelers and Patriots have all kept continuity within their respective front offices overtime, ultimately keeping their franchises afloat in times of uncertainty. However, since starting his tenure as owner of the Carolina Panthers, David Tepper has done the complete and total opposite. Under Tepper, Carolina has had six different head coaches, and eight different starting quarterbacks since 2019.
Tepper originally bought the Panthers from their previous owner, Jerry Richardson, for $2.2 billion; the highest bid in NFL history. But since taking over order, only one thing has been certain through the 93 games: losing. The Panthers are 30-63 on the field which is the third worst record over that span in the NFL.
The impatience of our micromanaging owner is causing discrepancy throughout the Carolinas and its even turning off potential head coaching candidates for the future.
According to the popular sports talk show ‘The Herd’, “There has been buzz that staff members inside of the Panthers facility are practically warning potential head coaches about Tepper’s insanity,” Colin Cowherd said.
Ultimately, in the turbulent landscape of the NFL, it is the teams that maintain a commitment to consistency that often find themselves hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. But thus far into Tepper’s era in Carolina, he has not shown the capability to do so, leaving fans tormented with losing seasons year after year.
