Known for his R&B style, singer, rapper, songwriter, producer, fashion designer, director, multidisciplinary artist, Tyler, the Creator has recently released his newest album “Chromakopia”.
Even though it feels like it was so recent that he released his last full album, “Call me if you get lost,” this new album has transformed how I view his music.
This album goes into parts of Tyler that he keeps from the public. In the opening song, “St. Chroma”, you are transported into Tylers Psyche. In “Noid” Tyler discusses his paranoia about being famous and how fame isolates an individual. He longs for time away from the cameras and microphones that he finds himself trapped in between.
Additionally, a tragic message discussing how he dreads to end up like his dad, who he never really knew in “Like Him.” He has previously dissed his father for being estranged, adding to the sadness in this song. Although he learns the truth from his mom that she was the reason he had never known his father.
He is left with questions about him, which his mom tries to satisfy. This album showcases the complexity that Tyler has, not only as his characters, but his life too. I feel like he has unlocked a whole new view for himself, but also to encourage others to embrace their identity.
“Take your mask off” is a great example of the depth that Tyler brings to his racial identity, and being okay with who he is. Overall, this album is a great mix of emotions, both lighthearted and serious. This album will stay in his top 3 best of all time.
