East Meck wins $1,500 from student hunger drive.

East Meck flew in strong at the Carolinas student hunger drive this year, winning runner up in food collection for division two schools with a $1,000 prize. East also won an extra $500 for most creative fundraising event for the rice and bean cook off that congress held before the last home football game.

Schools from all around the Charlotte area were competing to collect as much food as they could to win up to $2,000 from the Carolinas Student Hunger Drive, which is sponsored by Food Lion. Schools that collected the most food in their division were rewarded with $2,000 and runner-ups received $1,000.

Congress was in charge of the food drive at East and represented the school well. This year’s theme was “Rice for Life”, so students in clubs and boards focused mainly on bringing bags of rice to have the most poundage. Congress was able to encourage people to contribute to the drive by creating a competition between clubs and boards around the school with the collection and the rice and bean cook off.

Through the hunger drive, congress was able to bring the school together in the spirit of service, and bring back some money to East in the process.
