East Meck womens tennis beats North Meck 5-4

The Lady Eagles defeated the North Meck Vikings Tuesday 5-4 in a match consisting of 6 singles and 3 doubles. The Eagles playing in the singles dominated North Meck in all but one set, winning 8 sets in all but one match.

Senior Lucy Smithwick initially had a draw with North Meck Junior Zimani Harris 8-8, but ended up losing after Harris won another set 7-1, breaking the tie and becoming the sole victor in the Vikings’ single matches. The Vikings were able to pull through during doubles and reigned victorious, winning six or seven more sets compared to the Eagles. Zimani Harris also played in doubles alongside North Meck junior Milana Lewis against freshmen Frances Rukenbrod and Mona Mercabi. Harris and Lewis beat Rukenbrod and Mercabi 8-1, not letting very many sets slide.

Senior Helen Mehreteab easily defeated North Meck sophomore Mariama Jawara 8-0. Senior Zoe Smithwick was able to conquer her singles match as well, making it the second undefeated match of the afternoon. Junior Amber Nee was named Player of the Match according to the website Maxpreps. She battled with freshman Kamden Wiggins and ended up winning 8-6. 

“Amber managed to pull off a victory despite a slow start trailing 1-4,” Coach Thomas Nguyen said.
