The importance of voting cannot be understated. Members of the NAACP club even took to the streets to shout about just how important it is to make your voice heard.
On October 30 East Meck’s National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) club hosted their March to the Polls event. Members of the club as well as people outside it walked from East to the Conference Drive bridge holding signs and chanting about the importance of voting in the 2024 election.
“We live in a world where every decision affects us all,” NAACP president Kristy Lowry said. “Voting is our chance to have a say in those decisions. Elections can be decided by a single vote. When one does not participate, that is one less voice being heard.”
This isn’t the first time March to the Polls has happened. In November 2022, NAACP hosted the first March to the Polls event with Activism Club and Club Interact and saw a large turnout of 40-50 people expressing the importance of voting.
“This year we wanted to continue the movement just to spread awareness and to encourage the people around us to go out and vote,” Lowry said. “Your vote counts and your voice deserves to be heard.”
Though this year’s event wasn’t quite as big, Lowry is still grateful for everyone that came out to support the movement.
“I think the event was a success,” Lowry said. “Personally I am very thankful for the turn out, the way things went and for those that came out to support.”
