French Immersion Day, also known by French students as, “La Journée d’Immersion en Français,” took place on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024. French SL l and ll students worked together to engage lower-level French students in a day full of fun, culture and traditions. Students were separated into groups, each representing a different francophone country. Of the many, nine were selected. These were Mauritius, Morocco, Haiti, Belgium, Switzerland, Louisiana, Cambodia, Democratic Republic of Congo and French Guiana.
Located in the Media Center, French Immersion Day allowed lower-level French students to visit all of these countries and participate in games, dances and eat traditional food. French SL l and ll students used the space to create visuals for students to imagine themselves in the country they were visiting by using decorations, flags and artifacts.
French SL l and ll students took much of the initiative in planning Immersion Day as it was their responsibility to prepare their script and all of their activities. However, the majority of the organizing was done by seniors Kayla Pennington, Kate Rogers and Nina Nguyen.
“It was definitely a lot of work, but it was all worth it in the end to see what we created,” Pennington said. She believes that her participation in making Immersion Day a success is something that she’ll hold on to as a big accomplishment. She and her partners were able to collaborate together to organize the event and promote its achievement both in and outside of school. With it being their second year taking part in it, they got the special experience of viewing it from the perspective of a student and a leader. French Immersion Day was an opportunity for participants to expand their knowledge of the French language and cultures across various countries.
Along with the students, CMS Board Member Lisa Clark Cline also attended Immersion Day and shared pictures of it on the CMS board Instagram account.
“It was so cool! I learned a lot about my country, L’île Maurice,” Junior and French SL l student Paula Torres Munoz said. She had lots of fun speaking French and doing activities with her group mates. She believes that had it not been for Immersion Day, she wouldn’t have increased her awareness of communities outside her own.
“It was a great way to share and connect with the culture!” Torres said.
