IT Chapter 2 is thrilling but flawed

Story by CaRon Lofton, Staff Writer

IT Chapter 2 follows the main characters from the first movie as adults. After Pennywise awakes from his 27-year hibernation everyone comes back to Derry to stop him once and for all. The castings for the adult versions of everyone are perfect and have some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. James McAvoy (Ben Denbrough), Bill Hader (Ritchie Tozier), and Jessica Chastain (Beverly Marsh) all have the most to work with and turn in phenomenal performances. Isaiah Mustafa (Mike Hanlon), James Ransone (Eddie Kasbrak) Jay Ryan (Ben Hanscom) and Bill Skarsgard (Pennywise) are also great in the movie.

There are many positives about IT Chapter 2 but there are also negatives, runtime being the key issue. Clocking in at 2 hours and 50 minutes the movie is too long for its own good. The editing and pacing are all over the place at certain spots, and the tone shifts too many times as well. On the positive side the action scenes are great, you get a real sense of urgency when Pennywise is on the screen going against one of the protagonists. The scares are good in the movie as well. As a viewer, expect to be entertained for most of the movie.

Overall IT Chapter 2 is a fun but rocky film that is a worthy sequel to the first one.
